FAMILY HOME IN SUFFOLK, VIRGINIA
After finding their forever home on the water in Suffolk, the family asked Q&Co to make it “more us”. We carefully considered spatial flow and re-arranged the rooms according to what works best for the young family and their lifestyle.
What was a small dining room off the kitchen is now the main living room, where parents can watch their children comfortably while cooking and entertaining guests in the large kitchen with an oversized island. The formal dining room (with a table seating up to eighteen) now serves as a transition between the front entrance hall and the snug room, while also being only a few steps away from the kitchen.
The light blue colour of the kitchen island was the starting point for the adjoining new living room. We designed custom upholstery and window dressings with the same shade of blue, incorporating several textures and patterns, and inserted accents of cornflower blue and vivid grass green. The walls were painted with a blue-toned white which helps to highlight all the colours in this often sun-drenched space.
Retention of a few pieces of furniture passed down from family was very important, especially in the formal dining room. We brought new life to the dining chairs by recovering the seats with a textured woven dark blue and white fabric. Two modern gold leaf chandeliers and grasscloth wallpaper have imbued this impressively-sized space with timeless and appropriate elegance.
We chose to add English flair to this older property. Morris & Co wallpaper – a nod to the enduring English Arts & Crafts movement – was installed in the entrance hall. Another Morris & Co pattern and colour scheme was hung in the guest loo, bringing movement and meaning to this private space as well.
The result is a timeless and classic aesthetic for the family to enjoy for many years to come.
